Founder of Medentally | Medical and Dental Mentor
Dr Begum is a medical dentist and medical doctor who supports medical and dental applicants, and clinicians at key points in their career journey.
Background
I grew up in inner-city Birmingham and faced significant challenges in an environment where education for girls was not always prioritised. These early experiences shaped my resilience and instilled a deep belief in the transformative power of education — particularly for those navigating competitive and unfamiliar pathways.
Through Medentally, I support applicants to medicine and dentistry, and clinicians at key points in their professional journey, offering calm, experienced guidance grounded in real-world insight.
Clinical and Academic Experience
I qualified as a dentist and have worked across a wide range of clinical settings, including roles as a Dental Officer in the British Army in Germany, a Flying Dentist in the Falkland Islands, and as a Senior Dental Officer at the Shell Oil Health Centre in Brunei. I have also worked extensively within NHS and private practices in the UK. Alongside my clinical work, I have long been involved in education, serving as a tutor and examiner for final-year medical and dental students and as a senior lecturer for postgraduate dental and medical masters trainees.
I later qualified as a medical doctor from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, beginning medical school whilst being 37 weeks pregnant and raising a young family. I completed my junior doctor training across general surgery, general medicine, and orthogeriatric medicine, and have worked across primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of care within the NHS. I have also worked as an examiner for the GMC PLAB exam. During the Covid-19 pandemic, I worked on the front line in A&E, managing patients presenting with medical and dental problems during an exceptionally demanding period.
In parallel with my clinical work, I was awarded the Master’s Scholarship for Excellence by Cardiff University’s School of Law and Politics, completing a Master’s degree in The Legal Aspects of Medical Practice (LAMP) 2023. This legal and regulatory insight informs my understanding of the professional, ethical, and regulatory environment that students and clinicians will ultimately enter and may face challenges in.
Supporting applicants, parents and clinicians
I have extensive experience supporting applicants through personal statements and interview preparation, as well as advising parents seeking clear and realistic guidance for their children. I have worked closely with sixth-form students from state and independent schools, including those from non-traditional or under-represented backgrounds. I also support qualified clinicians as they navigate career transitions, professional scrutiny, or early career decision-making.
My experience as a university panel interviewer for medicine and dentistry, alongside my former role as a GMC PLAB examiner, provides me with clear insight into what selectors look for in competitive applications and exams. I use this knowledge to offer focused, practical, and confidence-building support tailored to each individual.
Approach
My approach is supportive, structured, and personalised. I understand the pressures faced by applicants, the concerns of parents, and the realities of clinical practice. I believe that with the right bespoke guidance, individuals can approach these challenges with confidence, self - belief and position themselves in the best way, to increase their chances for success, be it in gaining a place at dental or medical school, or navigating professional challenges.
